In October 1962, Hawking arrived at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical physics to do research in cosmology. Initially, Hawking struggled his first year as a doctoral student. He was disappointed when he was assigned Dennis William Scima as a supervisor, one of the founders of cosmology, instead of the renowned Fred Hoyle.
Unfortunately, for Dennis Scima, Hawking found his mathematics to be inadequate for his desired work in general relativity and cosmology. But for the most part, everything seemed to be alright, until Stephen Hawking had a diagnosis that changed his life forever.
