In 1959, at the age of 17, Hawking began his education at the University College, Oxford. While at school, he became bored and found the material to be overwhelmingly easy and mostly kept to himself. However, by his second year, he made an attempt to fit in and even rose in popularity.

He showed interest in classical music, science fiction, and he even joined the boat club where he was coxswain of a rowing crew. The coach noted that he was the daredevil of the team and was known to steer the crew on risky courses that sometimes led to damaged boats.
