During his final appearance on television, Stephen Hawking was interviewed on Neil deGrasse Tyson’s show Star Talk, where Hawking addressed the question: what was around before the Big Bang?

Hawking said that by applying a Euclidean approach to quantum gravity, that the history of the universe becomes four-dimensional with no boundary. Much like how there’s nothing south of the South Pole, there was also nothing before the Big Bang.
