Stephen Hawking was a well-known atheist who claimed that “the universe is governed by the laws of science.” He believed that there is a difference between religion, which is based on authority and science, which is based on observation and reason.

In an interview with The Guardian on the topic of death, Hawking stated that “the brain is a computer which will stop working when its components fail” and that the afterlife is “a fairy story people afraid of the dark”. In September 2014, he was the keynote speaker at the Starmus Festival where he openly declared himself to be an atheist.
