In the 1990s, Hawking began to focus his attention on physics. In 1993, he co-edited a book on the Euclidean quantum gravity with Gary Gibbons. He also published a collection of his own articles about black holes and the Big Bang.
In 1994, Hawking and Roger Penrose delivered a series of lectures at Cambridge’s Newton Institute. These were published in 1996 as “The Nature of Space and Time”. In 1997, Hawking and Kip Thorne participated in a 1991 public scientific wager about the existence of black holes. The wager was against John Preskill from Caltech.
