In 1999, Jane Hawking released her memoir Music to Move the Stars about her marriage to Hawking and the eventual failure of their union. Her memoir caused a rift in the media, yet Hawking made no public statement on the book or the way that it portrayed him as a husband and father.

After divorcing Jane and marrying Elaine, Hawking’s first family felt that they were being excluded from Hawking’s life. In addition, there were also suspicions that Hawking was being physically abused. There were police investigations but were closed after Hawking refused to make a complaint.
