Hawking’s Marriage Continues To Struggle

By the 1980s, Hawking’s marriage to Jane was struggling more than ever. Jane felt that their lives were being intruded on by the nurses and assistants required to take care of Hawking. Also, Hawking’s celebrity status and their disagreement regarding religion put a lot of strain on their relationship.

In the late 1980s, Hawking had also become quite close with one of his female nurses named Elaine Mason. Some of Hawking’s friends and family saw their friendship as questionable. In 1990, Hawking left Jane for Elaine and married her in 1995, saying, “It’s wonderful – I have married the woman I love.” However, Hawking and Mason quietly divorced in 2006.
