As a young boy, Hawking began school at the Byron House School in Highgate, London but later blamed the school’s methods for his inability to learn to read and write. Then, at eight years old, he attended St Albans High School for a few months when it was okay for boys to attend.
During the early 1950s, Hawking attended a variety of independent schools, yet was sick on the day of scholarship examinations for Westminister School — the school his father desired for him to attend. However, this ended up working out, because it allowed him to stay with his close group of friends which helped him to develop the interests that would stay with him for the rest of his life.
