In the early 1980s, Hawking began a new kind of quantum theory research regarding the origin of the universe. He proposed that there might not a boundary, beginning, or end to the universe. This information was published in a proposal with Jim Hartle known as the Hartle-Hawking state.

It opined that the universe had no boundary in space-time before the big bang which then brought about serious issues regarding the existence of God. Hawking noted that “If the universe has no boundaries but is self-contained… then God would not have had any freedom to choose how the universe began.” Although he did not completely deny the possibility of the existence of a creator his theories definitely ruffled some feathers.
