By December 1977, Hawking’s marriage to Jane was already struggling. This isn’t surprising considering Hawking’s position and newfound fame, all while Jane was trying to figure out her own education. Jane also met an organist named Jonathan Hellyer Jones when she was singing in the church choir.

Hellyer Jones became close with the Hawking family and he and Jane began to develop romantic feelings for one another. However, Jane said that Hawking was accepting of the situation and “he would not object so long as I loved him.” Jane and Hellyer Jones made sure to not break up the family and their relationship remained platonic.
