In 1979, Hawking was appointed the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics (1979-2009). The position was founded in 1663 with the money left in the will of Reverend Henry Lucas who had been the Member of Parliament for the University.

The position was first held by Isaac Barrow and then in 1669 by Isaac Newton. Hawking then went on to be the Dennis Stanton Avery and Sally Tsui Wong-Avery Director of Research at DAMTP. However, all of this fame and recognition began to put some extra strain on his relationship with his wife.
