In the 1970s, Hawking brought up his idea what is now known as the second law of black hole dynamics which assumes that the event horizon of a black hole can never get smarter. Hawking, James Bardeen, and Brandon Carter also proposed the four laws of black hole mechanics which was built on work by graduate student John Wheeler.

Hawking and his team also supported Wheeler’s theory that states that no matter what a black hole was originally made from, it can be completely described in the properties of mass, electrical charge, and rotation. Hawking’s essay “Black Holes” went on to win the Gravity Research Foundation Award in 1971 and he released his first book The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, written with George Ellis, which was published in 1973.
