In 1968, Hawking went on to become a member of the Institution of Astrology in Cambridge. While still collaborating with Penrose, Hawking expanded his ideas on the singularity theorem that he had discussed in his doctoral thesis.
This included the theory that the universe may have started with a singularity. Their joint essay also went on to be the runner-up for in the 1968 Gravity Research Foundation competition. Together in 1970, they published a theory that if the universe obeys the general theory of relativity and fits any of the models of physical cosmology, then it must have begun as a singularity.
