The Golden Globe Nominations Are Out And People Are Already Practicing Their Standing Ovations
The Golden Globe nominations are finally in! Actors Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slate revealed nominees alongside Golden Globe ambassador Isan Elba and some other important Hollywood execs on Thursday, December 6th.
I am honestly so excited about all of the nominees this year, and I can't wait to find out who takes home the trophies on January 6th. Keep reading to find out who made the cut, and to find out who's hosting the show this year.
Best Performance By An Actress In A Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television
There were some fantastic miniseries on TV this year, and a whole bunch of them starred some pretty fantastic actresses. Amy Adams earned a nomination for Sharp Objects, Patricia Arquette for Escape at Dannemora, Connie Britton for Dirty John, Laura Dern for The Tale, and Regina King for Seven Seconds.
This category is going to be a close race. Amy Adams might be the frontrunner, but really, it's anybody's game.
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
This year's Best Comedy Television Series nominees include Barry (HBO), The Good Place (NBC), Kidding (Showtime), The Kominsky Method (Netflix), and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon). Both Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home some big awards at this year's Emmys, but hopefully Kidding gets the recognition it deserves at the Golden Globes.
Kidding wasn't yet airing when the Emmy Awards were given out, but honestly, this show is a masterpiece. I love The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel too, but Kidding is just in a different class.
Best Performance By An Actor In A Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television
This year's Best Actor in a Limited Series nominees includes Antonio Banderas, Daniel Bruhl, Darren Criss, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Hugh Grant. Benedict Cumberbatch is nominated for his work in Patrick Melrose, a five-part Showtime miniseries based on semi-autobiographical novels about Britain's upper class by Edward St Aubyn.
Benedict Cumberbatch was also nominated for an Emmy for this role, but he didn't end up winning that golden statue. Maybe he'll have better luck at the Golden Globes.
Could Darren Criss Be The Winner?
Darren Criss is nominated for a Golden Globe this year for his starring role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Criss won an Emmy for his work in this miniseries, beating out Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeff Daniels, Jesse Plemons, Antonio Banderas, and John Legend.
There's a good chance he could win the Golden Globe too. His performance in this show is absolutely mesmerizing, and hopefully, this guy is well on his way to an EGOT.
Best Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role In A Series, Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television
This year's nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role on television are: Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Patricia Clarkson for Sharp Objects, Penelope Cruz for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Thandie Newton for Westworld, and Yvonne Strahovski for The Handmaid's Tale.
Alex Bornstein won the Emmy in this category, but the Emmys divide miniseries into comedy and drama, so she wasn't competing against all of these hard hitters. She still has a chance of winning the Golden Globe, but my money is on Thandie Newton.
Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Music is a crucial component of every movie ever made. It helps sets the tone and the mood of the film, and it's what makes some stand-out movies unforgettable.
This year's Best Original Score in a Motion Picture nominees are Marco Beltrami for A Quiet Place, Alexandre Desplat for Isle of Dogs, Ludwig Göransson for Black Panther, Justin Hurwitz for First Man, and Marc Shaiman for Mary Poppins Returns.
Best Television Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television
A lot of fantastic miniseries' came out this year. Nominees in this category include, The Alienist (TNT), The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (FX), Escape at Dannemora (Showtime), Sharp Objects (HBO), and A Very English Scandal (Amazon).
I love that all of these series come from different networks. It really reflects how diverse the market is becoming. American Crime Story is definitely going to win, though. How could it not?
Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In A Series, Limited Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television
This year's nominees for Best Performance by an Actor i a Supporting Role on Television are, Alan Arkin, Kieran Culkin, Edgar Ramirez, Ben Whishaw, and Henry Winkler. Henry Winkler actually won the Emmy in this category for his work on HBO's Barry.
The Emmys split this category into comedy and drama, though, so it's possible that Henry might have a tougher time beating out these dramatic actors. I think he'll probably still win the Golden Globe.
Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
There would be no movies without screenplays. Movies are built off scripts, and if you write a really good one, you could be nominated for a Golden Globe.
This year's Best Motion Picture Screenplay nominees are Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara for The Favourite, Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk, Adam McKay for Vice, and Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie for Green Book.
Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series – Musical or Comedy
This year, so many talented actresses have graced our television sets and laptop computers (even our phone screens, if that's how you happen to watch Netflix). The nominees this year are Kristen Bell, Candice Bergen, Alison Brie, Rachel Brosnahan, and Debra Messing.
It's nice that Kristen Bell is on that list. This is the first time she's been nominated for any major movie or television award. It's about time, though. This woman is an actual powerhouse.
The Expected Winner
I would bet on Rachel Brosnahan winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series— Musical or Comedy.
Rachel Brosnahan won an Emmy for her work in The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel this year, so it would make sense for her to win the Golden Globe too. The second season of The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel is now available on Amazon Prime Video. I'm going to have to make some time to watch it this weekend.
Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series – Musical Or Comedy
The nominees in this category are Sasha Baron Cohen for Who Is America?, Jim Carrey for Kidding, Michael Douglas for The Kominsky Method, Donald Glover for Atlanta, and Bill Hader for Barry.
This might be the strongest category at the Golden Globes this year. In any other year, any one of these nominees could take home the trophy, but this year, the competition is fierce. My pick is Jim Carrey for Kidding, but really, all of these guys deserve the win.
Could Michael Douglas Win Another Golden Globe?
Bill Hader won the Emmy for his role on Barry, and usually, Emmy winners are expected to go on to win the Golden Globe. However, Kidding came out after the Emmys aired. Also, Donald Glover already won a Golden Globe for Atlanta back in 2017.
Sasha Baron Cohen is a bit of a wild card, but I wouldn't be mad if he won. Michael Douglas already has three Golden Globes, including the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille award.
Best Motion Picture – Animated
This year's nominees for Best Animated Motion Picture are Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I think it's a toss-up between Incredibles 2 and the film that we'll discuss on the next page.
Incredibles 2 is a Disney film, and Disney has a pretty incredible track record when it comes to winning awards for animated movies. The film did get mixed reviews, though.
Could Wes Anderson Win In The Animation Category?
Even though Disney usually wins in the animation category, Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs does have a star-studded cast and some pretty interesting animation techniques. Anderson won a Golden Globe for Moonrise Kingdom, but that was a live action movie.
Fantastic Mr. Fox, his other stop-motion animated film, was nominated for a Golden Globe, but it didn't win the award. I guess we'll have to wait until January 6th to find out what happens.
Best Performance By An Actress In A Television Series – Drama
This year's Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series nominees are Caitriona Balfe for Outlander, Elisabeth Moss for The Handmaid's Tale, Sandra Oh for Killing Eve, Julia Roberts for Homecoming, and Keri Russell for The Americans.
Elisabeth Moss has a really good chance of taking home the Golden Globe in 2019. The Handmaid's Tale has been extremely popular and on a roll, and Moss' acting work is consistently superb.
Could Sandra Oh Win And Host?
Sandra Oh is hosting the Golden Globes this year alongside Andy Samberg. These two presented together at the Primetime Emmy Awards, and people seemed to like their chemistry.
I think it's going to be an interesting night. It will be even more interesting if Sandra Oh takes home a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series. It's going to be a big night for this leading lady.
Best Actor In A Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy
The 2019 nominees for Best Actor in a Motion Picture are Christian Bale for Vice, Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mary Poppins Returns, Viggo Mortensen for Green Book, Robert Redford for The Old Man & the Gun, and John C. Reilly for Stan & Ollie.
People love a good physical transformation, so I think the Golden Globe is probably going to go to Christian Bale. He is almost unrecognizable as Dick Cheney in Vice.
John C. Reilly Could Surprise Us
As much as I think Christian Bale is probably going to take home the trophy, I'd really like to see John C. Reilly win this one. John C. Reilly might be one of the most underrated actors of our generation. He's a brilliant comedic personality, but he's also a serious stage actor.
I'm glad he at least got a Golden Globe nomination this year, but it would be really nice to see him formally recognized for his work.
Best Director – Motion Picture
This year's Best Director of a Motion Picture nominees are Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Peter Farrelly for Green Book, Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman and Adam McKay for Vice.
It's pretty impressive that Bradley Cooper earned himself a Golden Globe nomination for his directorial debut. If he wins against veterans like Spike Lee, some people are probably going to be upset. A Star is Born was good, but I don't know if it was that good.
Best Television Series – Drama
The nominees for Best Drama Television Series are The Americans, Bodyguard, Homecoming, Killing Eve, and Pose.
Interestingly, due to some tricky timing, The Americans is the only series on this list that was also nominated for an Emmy in 2018. It ended up losing to Game of Thrones. I think The Americans will probably win the Golden Globe, but maybe one of the newbies will steal it from them this year.
Best Actress In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture
The nominees for Best Actress in a Supporting Role are Amy Adams for Vice, Claire Foy for First Man, Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk, Emma Stone for The Favourite, and Rachel Weisz for The Favourite.
Regina King is getting a lot of attention for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. That film gets a wide release on December 14th, so I suggest making a point to see it over the Christmas holidays.
Which One Is The Real Favorite?
It's interesting that Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for a film that's about two women competing for favor. We'll see if one or neither of them takes home the Golden Globe on January 6th.
This movie looks super cool and unusual and it's directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, so you know it's going to be good. I highly recommend seeing these two women knock it out of the park in The Favourite.
Best Original Song – Motion Picture
The nominees for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture are "All the Stars" from Black Panther, "Girl in the Movies" from Dumplin, "Requiem For a Private War" from A Private War, "Revelation" from Boy Erased, and "Shallow" from A Star Is Born.
Obviously, "Shallow" from A Star is Born is going to win. That song is a hit on the radio, people have been singing it for months, it just can't not win.
Best Performance By An Actor In A Television Series – Drama
The 2019 Golden Globe nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series are Jason Bateman for Ozark, Stephan James for Homecoming, Richard Madden for Bodyguard, Billy Porter for Pose, and Matthew Rhys for The Americans.
I don't think Jason Bateman really stands a chance, but it's nice that he was nominated. I had mixed feelings about the whole Ozark series. Some of the acting was good, but the whole show felt derivative and confusing.
Best Actor In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture
This year's nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Mahershala Ali for Green Book, Timothee Chalamet for Beautiful Boy, Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman, Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Sam Rockwell for Vice.
Timothy Chalamet is back in the game for award season in 2019. This guy doesn't look like he's slowing down any time soon. I think Sam Rockwell has a good chance of winning too, though.
Best Actress In A Motion Picture – Drama
The nominees for Best Actress In A Drama Motion Picture are Glenn Close in The Wife, Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born, Nicole Kidman in Destroyer, Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and Rosamund Pike in A Private War.
I think it would be really cool if Lady Gaga won a Golden Globe for her first ever movie acting role. I think Nicole Kidman's performance was better, but she has enough awards already.
Best Actress In A Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy
The nominees for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy are Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns, Olivia Colman for The Favourite, Elsie Fisher for Eighth Grade, Charlize Theron for Tully, and Constance Wu for Crazy Rich Asians.
First of all, let's talk about Elsie Fisher. Eighth Grade might just be my favorite movie of the year and Elsie Fisher's performance was naturalistic and perfect. She reacted to the news on Twitter by tweeting a shocked and delighted all caps "WHAT."
Best Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama
This year, Bradley Cooper was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his work in A Star Is Born, along with Willem Dafoe in At Eternity's Gate, Lucas Hedges in Boy Erased, Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, and John David Washington in BlacKkKlansman.
I think the Golden Globe will either go to Rami Malek or Bradley Cooper, but I think Rami Malek really deserves it. He took on a difficult role and he did it justice.
Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy
And now, the moment we've all been waiting for. Let's find out which movies were nominated for best picture. First, the comedy or musical category. The nominees are... Crazy Rich Asians, The Favourite, Green Book, Mary Poppins Returns, and Vice.
I'm not sure why Vice is a comedy. I guess it's sort of comedic. I think the award will either go to The Favourite or Crazy Rich Asians, but it's a pretty stacked lineup.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
The nominees for Best Motion Picture— Drama are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Streat Could Talk, and A Star Is Born. "Here's what I don't understand— why isn't A Star is Born considered a musical? That movie is all about the music. It should definitely be in the other category.
For that matter, what is Bohemian Rhapsody doing in this category? There's a lot of singing in that movie too. What even is a musical?
