While in college, Martha met Yale law student Andrew Stewart, who would become her husband in 1961. A year after their marriage, Stewart returned to Barnard to finish her degree, eventually graduating with a double major in history and architectural history in 1963. Afterward, the Stewarts moved to New York City, where Martha continued to model while Andrew set the foundations for a law career. Stewart had to discontinue modeling upon the birth of her one and only daughter Alexis in 1965. Now having a child to support, Stewart began looking at other career fields and dabbled in fields that were completely unrelated to modeling.
