Stewart was in a soap commercial at the age of 15, around which time she began modeling and appearing in television commercials and magazines. Perhaps one of the biggest modeling gigs that Stewart had was her work with haute-couture brand Chanel. She went on to attend Barnard College and continued to model to supplement her scholarship money. “I got enough modeling jobs at $50/hour — which was a lot of money at the time,” Stewart said in the PBS documentary, Makers. Although she intended to major in chemistry, Stewart kept changing her major before finally settling on architectural history.
