Martha Stewart Is Not Quite The Homemaking Maven We Think She Is…
Stewart Faces Prosecution For Trying To Beat The System
Stewart was at the height of her media empire for only a few years before she was indicted on nine counts of securities fraud and obstruction of justice. In 2002, Stewart gained public scrutiny and came under federal investigation after she suspiciously sold almost four thousand shares of her ImClone Systems stock before their value took a hard blow. Stewart had gained material, nonpublic information from her broker at Merrill Lynch, Peter Bacanovic, who was also indicted. Stewart immediately stepped down as chairman and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and began trial in 2004. Stewart refused to testify and maintained her innocence, despite a witness testimony and evidence.
