Drew Blyth Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, to what is best understood to be Hollywood's royal family. It might be hard to believe nowadays because she's the only Barrymore in acting, but her family has some serious acting chops that stretch back to the 1800s.

Both her father and mother were in the business, but her extended family is better known. Drew's great-uncle Lionel Barrymore won the 1931 Best Actor Oscar and is known for playing Mr. Potter in It's A Wonderful Life.

Coming from such a renowned family meant that Drew had made some incredible Hollywood connections before she could even speak. Her two godmothers are legendary Italian actress Sophia Loren, and theatre great Lee Strasberg's widow, Anna Strasberg. Her godparents were important for Drew because they provided a kind and nurturing relationship she didn't get from her parents.

Drew's godfather is none of than famed director Steven Spielberg. This relationship would come in handy when Drew landed her first major role in 1982.

E.T. would end up being the highest-grossing film of the '80s and catapult Drew to become the most famous child star of the time.

For her 10th birthday, she even danced the night away until 2 a.m. at the New York City nightclub, Limelight.

Considering the fact she was so young when she began on this destructive path, many would like to hope Drew's parents were there to help her. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Drew's mother was actually the one who first took her to Studio 54 after her divorce. She used Drew's fame as a way to increase her own social life. Drew's father John had his own substance abuse problems and was a violent drunk. Looking back, Drew said she "didn't really have parents."

Despite the fact it was her mother who introduced her to the party scene, she also sent Drew to rehab when she was only thirteen. Drew was sent off to an intense rehab assignment, except it wasn't your typical Betty Ford clinic.

Looking back she admitted her mom had sent her to a mental institution that was more like a "serious boot camp." Drew said it was a "horrible and dark" 18 months.

By the end of her stay in the mental facility, it was actually the doctors who suggested for Drew to truly stay clean she'd have to emancipate herself from her mother. Drew was unsure whether or not this was the right move, but after a failed suicide attempt, she realized to be successful she needed to cut her parents out of her life.

So, at the young age of 14, Drew returned to the real world and became an independent adult.

Her first major role came in 1992 when she played a teenage seductress in Poison Ivy. That same year, she shocked everyone by posing nude on the July cover of "Interview" magazine when she was only 16.

The engagement was called off only a few months later. In 1992, Drew became engaged again the actor Jamie Walter, but called it off within a year.

She decided as a little "gift" she would climb up on his desk, do a little dance, and then flash him. The moment left Letterman and the audience speechless.

Looking back on it, Drew says she doesn't regret doing it because "you only have one life" but that it seems like a distant memory and that it doesn't feel like who she is anymore.

This proved to be true when she landed the role of Julia Sullivan in the 1998 romantic comedy, The Wedding Singer. It seemed like her rise back to stardom had finally begun.

Flower Films released Never Been Kissed in 1999. In a review, CNN noted that the reason the film worked was Drew's "comedic timing and willingness to go all out." It was a huge commercial success and put Drew back on the map.
