Allen famously skips out on most awards ceremonies. He did attend the Oscars in 2002 to introduce New York-made films and honor those lost in the September 11th attacks, but he didn’t show up when he swept the ceremony in 1978. That year Annie Hall won Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture, but Allen couldn’t be bothered to show up. Why? Because he thought awards were stupid.
“The whole concept of awards is silly. I cannot abide by the judgment of other people, because if you accept it when they say you deserve an award, then you have to accept it when they say you don’t,” he said.
