Hubbard knew that if Scientology could gain some high-profile followers that have influence over the American public, then it would have a chance of growing bigger and better. What Was Really Going On With Sonny Bono?
A lot of unknown surrounds Bono's affiliation with the Church of Scientology because he was never exactly clear on why he joined. One interview in 1999 said it was because his ex, Cher suggested it. That doesn't exactly make sense though because Cher has never been connected to the church and even said she "didn't understand" his religion.
It gets even weirder when Bono's widow Mary was quoted as saying he had tried to break away from Scientology in the early '90s but that they "made it very difficult for him."
