The Dead Sea: Now

Currently, the Dead Sea is receding at an alarming rate. Scientists are now looking to crystalline salt samples taken from 1,000 feet below the bed to understand the potential dangers of a warming climate. Already a very dry area, scientists believe that climate change could reduce rainfall drastically as what happened hundreds of thousands of years ago. It has been observed that this region is one of the most affected by modern climate change, with the Dead Sea being the lowest spot on land and having a history of shrinking with the earth’s environmental shifts. Recently, the sea has dropped around four feet a year. It doesn’t help that human development has resulted in an increased demand for water, therefore taking it from the fresh water sources that flow into the sea.
